Methodology
This page explains how the numbers on the calendar and country pages are calculated.
Working days
Working days = days in the year − weekend days − public holidays falling on weekdays − half of the national half days. The weekend follows each country's own rule (e.g. Friday–Saturday in Saudi Arabia). Weekend days declared official working days (make-up days) count as working days.
Observed days
When a holiday that falls on a weekend is moved to another day, the moved day counts as a day off; it is not counted as an extra holiday.
Long weekends and bridge days
Long weekend: an uninterrupted block of at least 3 days off that includes at least one public holiday. Bridge day: a single working day between two days off; taking it joins the blocks.
Regional holidays
Holidays that apply only in some states or regions are listed separately and are not included in the national working-day count.
Estimated dates
Lunar religious holidays (e.g. Eid al-Fitr) are announced after moon sighting in some countries; dates before the official announcement are labelled 'estimated'.
Holiday names
Holiday names are never published from machine translation alone. An established name is used where one exists; otherwise the proper name is kept with a short description. Every name is checked against a source before publication.
